The Vista is the flagship in Garmin's recently expanded eTrex product range. As with the other products in the range, its appeal lies in the combination of high-tech features in a user friendly, light-weight and rugged package. The Vista takes the best features from each of the other eTrex models, providing not only a full range of navigational information, but also detailed basemapping and an in-built barometric altimeter, to allow a range of elevation and assent information to be displayed. This is the model to choose if you intend to use the unit for a variety of purposes such as long distance walks in hilly areas and as an aid to in-car and urban navigation. Even novice GPS users will soon be familiar with the functions of this unit. Garmin's 'Click Stick' on the front of its stylish silver fascia allowing simple movement through on-screen information and the scrollable basemap. The Vista comes with a suprisingly detailed pre-loaded map of settlements and roads throughout Europe, but the unit really comes into its own when data from Garmin's MapSource CD's are loaded via your PC. Points of interest such as shops and railway stations are combined with maps showing individually named streets in urban areas. MetroGuide CD data includes positional information for single houses, hotels and B&B's. It's database can be searched by building number, street and postcode allowing a precise location to be found from your destination address. Long distance walkers and in-car users will find this ability extremely useful. It is one of the first receivers compatible with the new WAAS navigation technology. This system utilises error correction data from ground based stations, relayed via satellite to provide increased positional accuracy. Although only available in certain trial areas at present, WAAS is likely to be the next major step in GPS technology.
