We’ve recently discovered, in Private Pike’s trunk, a facsimile of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard Training Manual, as used by the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment. It is marked with that stupid boy’s comments on the films he’s seen, the girls he’s dated and the progress of Aston Villa FC but otherwise is in good condition. The manual is Capt. Mainwaring's attempt to prepare the platoon to face - and recognise - the enemy in case they decide to invade Britain, between the pier and the Novelty Rock Emporium. Author Captain George Mainwaring served as a platoon commander in the army of occupation in France in 1919; he was platoon commander of the Home Guard 1939-45, manager of Swallow Bank, as well as a magistrate, alderman and secretary of the Rotary Club, Walmington-on-Sea. With the help of Guy Adams, and under the guidance of David Croft and Jimmy Perry, the creators and writers of the immortal ‘Dad’s Army’
