2004 Marques de Vargas Reserva, Rioja

Now into their fourth generation as winemakers, Rioja's Vargas family have wrought exponential success. Having amassed substantial vineyards and built a state-of-the-art winery, they've hired Bordeaux's famous Michel Rolland to improve quality even further. Production is limited to Reserva styles (unfiltered; aged in new oak for over a year) from pure Tempranillo. There's rich complexity of flavour here: cedarwood, cinnamon, cranberries, sloes and game.
